29 May 2026

It is important to highlight initiatives that aim to improve access to timely health advice and system navigation, particularly those designed to address inequities in accessing care and support informed decision-making. The Australian Government has introduced 1800MEDICARE, a free national service that provides 24/7 health advice and service navigation to people across Australia. The service aims to support individuals to access the right care at the right time by offering expert guidance and connecting them with appropriate health services. People can access 1800MEDICARE by calling 1800 633 422, or through the website and mobile app. The service connects users with a registered nurse who can listen to concerns, assess symptoms, and provide advice on next steps. This may include self-care guidance or referral to a general practitioner, pharmacy, local health service, or emergency care if required. The 1800MEDICARE website and app also provide accessible tools and information, including a symptom checker, medicines information, electronic prescriptions and an Active Script List. These features are designed to support individuals to access and manage their health care in ways that suit their needs. The service may be useful for people who:
