“There is immense opportunity in embedding consumer perspectives across all levels of health. Sometimes, things are the way they are simply because that’s how they’ve always been. There hasn’t been an opportunity to step back and ask, ‘How could this be different?’”

Last week, HCT gave evidence at the ADHD Inquiry, advocating for the inclusion of lived experiences in improving the system in diagnosing and supporting people with ADHD in Tasmania. We shared the challenges faced by Tasmanians seeking a diagnosis and support, including barriers to access and prejudices in healthcare. These perspectives were drawn from public consultations and the lived experience of our CEO, Ellen MacDonald.

Access to diagnosis, treatment, and support remains a significant barrier for many Tasmanians. Information on clear pathways to care, as well as access to clinicians who truly understand ADHD, are often lacking. This is especially true for people intersectional identities and others that experience access inequity to services, such as those from rural areas or on low incomes. People with ADHD who have self-medicated in the past often experience even greater difficulties in accessing medication, highlighting risks to the safety of these patients.

Consumers need clearer and more consistent pathways to diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing support. There is a unique opportunity to improve prescribing practices at the state level and have greater consistency across jurisdictions. Supporting primary healthcare practitioners and reducing stigma are also key to improving care for people with ADHD.

Any changes aimed at reducing access barriers must involve collaboration with consumers and people with lived experience. Working together will ensure that the solutions created are not only effective but also truly meet the needs of patients while prioritising their safety.
