Preventative Health Matters to Tasmanians: What We Heard
26 March 2026

Health Consumers Tasmania’s Preventive Health Position Statement is the culmination of four years of deep, statewide consultation with more than 880 Tasmanians. Through kitchen table conversations, workshops, community forums and the guidance of our Consumer Policy Advisory Group (PAG), Tasmanians shared what matters most to them when it comes to staying well.
Across the state, people told us they care deeply about prevention and not just treating illness but creating the conditions that allow everyone to live their best life. They spoke about wanting communities where health and wellbeing are supported long before someone reaches crisis point.
What Tasmanians Told Us
The message was clear:
- Prevention must be embedded in every level of planning, decision‑making and service design.
- Consumers and communities deserve a genuine voice in shaping the health system.
- Strong leadership is needed to drive long‑term change.
- A properly resourced 20‑Year Preventive Health Strategy is essential.
- Policies must address the root causes of poor health, including:
- inequity
- food insecurity
- unsafe or unhealthy environments
- limited access to essential services
Tasmanians want a health system that supports wellbeing, not just responds to illness — and they want to be part of shaping that future.
