‘A collaborative and participatory approach to support Tasmanians living in rural and remote areas to remove smoking products from their lives.’ The study has been approved by the UTAS Human Research Ethics Committee (H0029885).

The aim of the project is to work with rural & remote Tasmanians who are aged 15 years and over (including adults) to:

1. Understand the use, beliefs, knowledge, and concerns about smoking products (cigarettes and e-cigarettes) among rural Tasmanians, which will inform the co-design stage.

2. Reduce the use of smoking products (cigarettes and e-cigarettes) through co-designing a pilot cessation program.

There are two components in the project.

  1. Component one involves a 10-minute online survey completed by participants anonymously to understand the use, beliefs, knowledge, and concerns about smoking and vaping.
  2. Component two involves focus group discussions with 6-8 participants per group, to identify views relating to smoking/vaping, preferred messaging to use with rural Tasmanians and a co-design process to develop interventions to reduce uptake and increase cessation of regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

The Tobacco Control Group with the College of Health and Medicine, University of Tasmania are currently seeking participants from the following areas: Huon Valley, Tasman Peninsula (Nubeena), Swansea, Break O’Day area, Scottsdale, Queenstown, Roseberry, and Smithton. Our second priority areas are: Bruny Island, Triabunna area, Bicheno, Central Highlands, Meander Valley, Strahan, Longford, George Town, and Wynyard.
