Help Shape Expectations for Health Practitioners – Ahpra Focus Group
10 August 2026

What do you expect from a health practitioner?
When you see a doctor, nurse, psychologist, physiotherapist, pharmacist or another registered health practitioner, what matters most to you? How should they treat patients? What behaviours help build trust and confidence? What skills and experience should they maintain to provide safe care?
Health Consumers Tasmania is facilitating a consumer focus group with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) to explore consumer expectations of health practitioners.
We are seeking community members from a range of backgrounds and experiences to share their views on topics such as:
- Respectful and professional behaviour
- Communication and listening skills
- Trust, safety and accountability
- Cultural safety and inclusion
- Maintaining skills and competence over time
- Expectations around continuing practice and experience
Your feedback will help inform future policy and regulatory discussions about what the public expects from registered health practitioners.
About Ahpra and the National Boards
Ahpra works with 15 National Boards to regulate registered health practitioners across Australia, including doctors, nurses, midwives, psychologists, physiotherapists, pharmacists and many other professions.
Together, Ahpra and the National Boards help protect the public by:
- Registering health practitioners
- Developing professional standards and guidelines
- Managing notifications and concerns about practitioner conduct or performance
Their role is not to deliver healthcare services, but to help ensure that registered health practitioners meet the standards expected by the Australian community.
