Health Consumers Tasmania (HCT) is Tasmania’s independent, consumer-led health advocacy organisation. We work alongside consumers, communities, health services and government to strengthen consumer leadership, influence health policy and system reform, build capability, and drive more equitable health outcomes for all Tasmanians

As our organisation continues to grow and strengthen its impact, we are seeking passionate and committed individuals to join our Board and support the strategic leadership and direction of our organisation.

Lead the Board of Health Consumers Tasmania
Help elevate the consumer voice for better health outcomes for all Tasmanians.

We’re looking for…
A new Chair of the Health Consumers Tasmania Board of Directors who can lead the board of a values-based, consumer-led organisation committed to equity and inclusion in health.

We are especially seeking someone who:
Has strong links to the health consumer movement, or a clear understanding of why consumer voice is essential in shaping health policy and services.
Brings inclusive leadership, deep commitment to equity, and values respectful collaboration.
Has experience chairing or participating in not-for-profit boards and understands the core responsibilities of a Board Chair, including:

  • Leading the effective performance of the Board
  • Working with the CEO to set agendas and ensure quality information for Board decisions
  • Maintaining a positive and productive relationship between the Board and CEO
  • Overseeing Board and committee performance reviews
  • Representing the organisation at meetings and events as needed
  • Chairing the Governance Sub-Committee

This is a voluntary leadership role. Travel and other reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

What you’ll contribute
We’re seeking someone who can:

  • Supporting the CEO in their role leading the organisation
  • Support the organisation’s strategic focus and foster effective governance
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with board members, and other key stakeholders
  • Provide stewardship and be a respected spokesperson for the organisation, when required


You do not need to meet every point. If you are passionate about consumer-led change and experienced in governance leadership, we welcome your interest.

About the Board
Meets every two months
Directors join one subcommittee
Four-year terms (with rotating re-nomination every two years)
Selection includes a panel with a current Director and a consumer representative

We are looking for an individual with financial expertise who can support the Board’s financial oversight responsibilities. Experience in financial management, audit, risk or governance will be highly regarded. Board experience is not essential.

We also welcome expressions of interest from people interested in serving as Directors. We are particularly interested in individuals with skills or experience in:

  • Lived experience of healthcare in Tasmania
  • Governance and strategic leadership
  • Community engagement
  • Finance, audit or risk
  • Legal expertise
  • Communications or public policy

Most importantly, we are seeking people who are committed to ensuring the voices of consumers remain at the centre of Tasmania’s health system.


We encourage applications from:

  • People with lived experience of health services
  • Individuals from diverse backgrounds and communities
  • People living in regional, rural and remote Tasmania
  • Both first-time and experienced board members

What to Expect:

Board positions are voluntary and offer a rewarding opportunity to contribute to meaningful system change. The current HCT board directors are a dynamic group of people from diverse backgrounds that offers an opportunity to undertake such a role in a supportive and friendly environment. Directors are expected to attend bi-monthly board meetings and participate in one subcommittee and governance activities that support HCT’s purpose and strategic direction.
